HKSAR Passport

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passports are issued to Chinese citizens who have the right of abode in Hong Kong and who hold valid Hong Kong permanent identity cards. The HKSAR passport is valid for travel to all countries in the world. Now there are more than 160 countries and territories that have granted visa-free access or visa-on-arrival to HKSAR passport holders. However, please note that the final consent to enter these countries is still up to the local immigration authorities.

If your destination is not among the countries or territories above, you should contact the relevant consulates to ascertain the visa requirements for your visit.

Eligible applicants in the Mainland with a valid HKSAR permanent identity card may submit their applications for HKSAR passport through the internet or the Immigration Department mobile application, by post, or in person at the Mainland Offices. For replacement of passport which has been lost/defaced/is not available, or amendment of personal particulars in a passport, the applicant is required to submit the application in person at the Mainland Offices or the Hong Kong Immigration Department. If the applicant is not holding a valid HKSAR permanent identity card, the application must be submitted in person at the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Applications submitted by either means may choose to collect the passports at the Mainland Offices. The processing time of an application will normally take 4 to 6 weeks upon receipt of all necessary documents, fee and photograph. The time for forwarding the application and dispatching the prepared passport is excluded. The Mainland Office will inform the applicant when the new passport is ready for collection. The existing HKSAR passport should be produced for cancellation upon collection of the new one. The originals of supporting documents should be produced for verification if only photocopies of them are provided upon application.

HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes

Hong Kong residents who are not eligible for an HKSAR passport may apply for the HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes (Doc/I), which can serve as your travel document.

For replacement of Doc/I which has been expired, eligible applicants in the Mainland may submit a replacement application by post to the Hong Kong Immigration Department or apply in person at the Mainland Offices. For replacement of Doc/I which has been lost/damaged/defaced/is not available, the applicant is required to submit the application in person at the Mainland Offices or the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Applications submitted by post or through the Mainland Offices may choose to collect the passports at the Mainland Offices. The processing of an application will normally take 4 to 6 weeks after all necessary documents, fee and photograph have been received. This does not include the time for forwarding the application and dispatching the prepared Doc/I. The Mainland Office will inform the applicant when the new Doc/I is ready for collection. The existing Doc/I should be produced for cancellation upon collection of the new one. The originals of supporting documents should be produced for verification if only photocopies of them are provided upon application.

HKSAR Re-entry Permit

The HKSAR Re-entry Permits are issued to Hong Kong permanent residents or Hong Kong residents granted unconditional stay for travel to the Mainland and Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR).

When passing through Hong Kong immigration control points to or from the Mainland or the Macao SAR, Hong Kong residents do not need a HKSAR Re-entry Permit if they can produce the following documents:

For replacement of HKSAR Re-entry Permit which has been expired or lost, eligible applicants in the Mainland may submit a replacement application in person at the Mainland Offices and subsequently collect the HKSAR Re-entry Permit through an authorised local referee at the selected Immigration Branch Office in Hong Kong.

The processing time of an application will normally take 4 to 6 weeks upon receipt of all necessary documents and photograph. The time for forwarding the application is excluded. The Immigration Branch Offices in Hong Kong will inform the authorised local referee when the new HKSAR Re-entry Permit is ready for collection. The authorised local referee should attend the selected Immigration Branch Office for payment and collection of the HKSAR Re-entry Permit.

Hong Kong and Macao Residents Entry and Exit Permit (Home Return Permit)

According to the laws and regulations of the Mainland, a Hong Kong resident of Chinese nationality, as long as he has not declared to the nationality authority his identity as a foreigner, can apply for the Hong Kong and Macao Residents Entry and Exit Permit (Home Return Permit) to the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department through the China Travel Service (Hong Kong) Limited (CTS), irrespective of whether he is holding a foreign passport or travel document, and enter and exit the Mainland with his Home Return Permit. Hong Kong residents in the Mainland whose Home Return Permits are going to expire within 6 months or has expired, lost, damaged or defaced may apply for renewal or replacement of the permits at the Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Department. What should I do if I lost or damaged my HKSAR Passport in the Mainland?Expand

If you have lost or damaged your HKSAR Passport in the Mainland, you should report the loss to the Immigration Department after your return to Hong Kong. You will be required to complete an application form and submit your replacement application in person at any of the Immigration Offices that handle travel document applications.
